Between June and July each year, the Cork Oak forests of southern Portugal are a hive of activity. The age old tradition of Cork harvesting, uses skills passed down from generation to generation to skilfully split the bark from a cork oak tree without damaging the internal trunk. Performed by hand, the harvest ensures the most sustainable and eco-friendly methods are used to ensure the longevity of the trees.
Each tree can live between 150 and 250 years and is initially harvested after the first 25 years, then every 9 years thereafter. After the bark is removed, it is seasoned in the fields before being transported to the factories for processing into the beautiful cork end products brought to you by Cork Imports Australia.
